Two persons were killed in separate wild animal attacks in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district on Saturday, forest department officials said.
In the first incident, Kashinath Shivaram Lonwale (60), a resident of Padmapur, was killed by a wild animal around 6 pm in compartment number 179 of the Moharli forest range. He had gone to the forest to collect firewood when the attack occurred, an official said.
Forest personnel rushed to the spot after being alerted. The deceased’s family was provided immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 as per norms. Camera traps have been installed in the area to monitor the movement of wild animals, the official added.
In another incident earlier in the day, Sunita Shamrao Bhoyar (43) , a resident of Adarshkheda village in Mul tehsil, was killed in a tiger attack. She had gone along with 50 to 60 women from the village to collect cotton when the tiger reportedly attacked her.
Forest officials said further monitoring has been intensified in both Mul and Moharli areas to prevent such incidents and to track the movement of the big cat.
