Trump On Passport: US Unveils Controversial America250 Commemorative Travel Document
The US State Department is set to release a limited-edition commemorative passport featuring President Donald Trump , marking the 250th anniversary of American independence under the America250 celebrations .
The design includes interior pages showing Trump alongside the Declaration of Independence text , the US flag, and a gold-embossed signature. Another page highlights artwork of the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence , blending historical imagery with modern political symbolism.
Officials said the rollout will be limited to in-person applications at the Washington Passport Agency , with an estimated initial batch of 25,000 to 30,000 passports. The document will retain all standard passport security features and remain fully valid for international travel.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the initiative is meant to commemorate a historic milestone, adding that the passports will feature “customised artwork and enhanced imagery” while maintaining strict security standards. He confirmed that eligible US citizens can apply during the rollout period at standard fees.
While Trump has not issued a detailed statement specifically on the passport design, he has supported broader America250 commemorative initiatives , including national events and collectible coin proposals.
The announcement has triggered strong international reactions and online satire. The Iran Embassy in Mumbai mocked the concept on social media, contrasting it with its own heritage and trolling the design as symbolic excess. In another widely circulated post, the Iranian diplomatic network described the move in blunt terms, writing: “Ego arrives before the traveler” , a remark that quickly went viral across platforms.
Separately, critics and commentators have questioned the unprecedented nature of featuring a prominent political leader on a passport design, with some arguing it raises questions about tradition and symbolism in official documents.
The phrase “Liberty out, Trump in” has also circulated online amid political debate and discussion over timing, including references to fluctuating approval ratings.
California Governor Gavin Newsom added to the online reaction, posting a satirical all-caps message referencing “MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING,” mocking the announcement in a Trump-style tone.
The passport initiative is part of a wider federal programme that includes commemorative coins and large-scale national events for the 250th anniversary year.
