Owaisi Urges PM Modi to Intervene as US–Israel Strikes on Iran Spark Tensions
Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the AIMIM and Member of Parliament from Hyderabad, strongly condemned the joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to play a key role in halting the war .
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Owaisi expressed deep concern over the instability prevailing in West Asia. He described the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as “immoral, illegal and against humanity.” He said it was particularly distressing that the attacks took place during the holy month of Ramadan and criticised what he termed a double standard in international politics, noting that the strikes occurred even as peace talks were reportedly progressing.
He warned that the conflict must stop immediately, as any further escalation could push the entire West Asian region into instability, with serious repercussions for India. Owaisi pointed out that nearly one crore Indians are employed in the Gulf region and stressed that their safety must be treated as a top priority. An expansion of the war, he said, could endanger the jobs and livelihoods of migrant workers.
Raising concerns about rising fuel prices, he stated that even a one-dollar increase in crude oil prices would have a significant impact on India’s economy. Given the existing uncertainty in global markets, he cautioned that the crisis could impose an additional burden.
Owaisi said that with flight services being cancelled, hundreds of Indian nationals, including Umrah pilgrims who had travelled to Mecca and Medina, were stranded in various countries. He called upon the Union government to take immediate steps to assist Indians in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman and other nations.
He sharply criticised the actions of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , alleging that the attacks were aimed at effecting regime change in Iran. However, he remarked that the Iranian people have lived under sanctions for the past 35 years and that the country’s political system would not change at the behest of external forces. Referring to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Owaisi said the reasons cited at the time were later proven false. He added that the instability witnessed in Libya, Syria and Sudan due to wars should serve as a warning to the world and that adopting a similar approach in Iran would be dangerous.
Drawing a comparison between Israel’s actions against Iran and Pakistan’s conduct towards Afghanistan, he described such countries as forces creating instability in their neighbourhoods. “Occupation and provocation will not resolve issues. Dialogue is the only way forward,” he said.
Appealing directly to Prime Minister Modi, Owaisi urged him to leverage his influence on international platforms to mediate and bring the war to an end. He noted that India maintains distinct relations with the United States, Israel and Iran and said this was the time to transform that experience into peace diplomacy.
“Ordinary people suffer the most in wars. Children and women are losing their lives. This is a grave blow to humanity,” he said, calling on the Union government to act proactively in the interest of regional stability, the safety of Indians abroad and India’s economic interests.
