The exchange of fire took place on Wednesday in the forested stretches of West Singhbhum district, a region long known for Maoist activity. According to police officials, the encounter occurred during a search operation conducted jointly by district police and CRPF personnel near the borders of Goilkera and Tonto police station limits.

The slain Maoist has been identified as Israel Purty, also known as Amrit, a member of the Sagen Angaria unit of the CPI (Maoist). Authorities confirmed that he carried a bounty of ₹1 lakh , indicating his active involvement in insurgent activities in the region.

Police said the operation was part of a sustained crackdown on Maoist networks operating in the Kolhan belt. The forces had launched a coordinated search when they came under fire, leading to an intermittent gunbattle deep inside the forest . Even as the body of the Maoist was recovered, officials noted that firing continued sporadically , suggesting the presence of more insurgents.

A rifle was also seized from the encounter site, adding to the evidence of militant activity in the zone.

Security agencies believe that Maoist presence in the region has weakened in recent months following a series of encounters that eliminated several top leaders. However, the continued activity indicates that remnants of the network are still operational. Notably, Misir Besra, a senior politburo member of CPI (Maoist) with a bounty of ₹1 crore, is said to remain active in the area along with his group.

Officials have made it clear that operations will continue with full intensity , with the aim of flushing out remaining Maoist elements and restoring security in the region.

For now, the forests of Kolhan remain tense, with security forces maintaining a strong presence and search operations still underway .
