Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House today for delegation-level talks, marking the high point of his four-day official visit to India aimed at decisively resetting bilateral relations. The leaders are expected to review the India-Canada Strategic Partnership across trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, and people-to-people ties, and attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum at Bharat Mandapam, where MoU exchanges and joint press statements are anticipated.

Carney’s visit has emphasized the vast economic and strategic opportunities between the two countries. He highlighted India as “the world’s fastest-growing major economy” and engaged extensively with CEOs, business leaders, and representatives of Canadian pension funds to explore fresh investment opportunities in infrastructure, technology, and energy transition. He also participated in an innovation showcase and met with university researchers, underscoring the importance of research collaboration as a foundation for long-term economic partnership.

In parallel, India and Canada launched a Talent and Innovation Strategy focused on four pillars: embedding Canadian capability in Indian priority sectors, translating knowledge into economic outcomes, deepening two-way talent mobility, and demonstrating results through speed and delivery. These initiatives aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation in technology, clean energy, and innovation.

On the diplomatic front, Carney met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Leela Palace ahead of the summit, continuing discussions on trade, investment, and strategic cooperation, further laying the groundwork for today’s high-level meeting with Prime Minister Modi.

Key anticipated outcomes include a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) targeting bilateral trade of USD 70 billion by 2030 , nearly double the current trade of USD 22–24 billion , along with a potential 10-year uranium supply deal to support India’s expanding civilian nuclear programme — signalling a new era in India-Canada relations . “It is expected to be signed by the end of this year,” Carney said while addressing the Canada-India Forum in Mumbai, underlining the commitment to formalise and accelerate the partnership.
