A Night of Rain and Ruin: Bengaluru Storm Leaves 10 Dead, City in Chaos
A sudden and intense spell of rain, accompanied by hail and gusty winds, brought Bengaluru to a standstill on Wednesday evening, leaving 10 people dead and causing widespread disruption across the city, officials said.
The storm, which lasted for nearly an hour , triggered multiple incidents of structural collapse, electrocution, and urban flooding. Authorities said the fatalities were reported from different parts of the city, underlining the widespread impact of the weather event.
The most serious incident occurred at the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital premises , where a compound wall collapsed during the heavy rain, killing seven people , including a six year old girl. Two of the deceased were students from Kerala who had reportedly taken shelter near the wall when it gave way.
In another incident on Bannerghatta Road near Vega City Mall , a 35 year old man identified as Raghu died of electrocution after coming into contact with a live electrical source during the storm. In Yarab Nagar , a student, Syed Sufiyan, also died due to electrocution while attempting to park his motorcycle in heavy rain. A separate fatality was reported from Chamarajapet , where Manjunath died after a cement block fell through the roof of a house during the storm.
Civic officials said the intense downpour resulted in large-scale urban damage, with at least 87 trees uprooted and 131 branches snapped across Bengaluru. Several parked vehicles were crushed under fallen trees, while multiple roads were blocked due to debris and waterlogging.
Traffic movement was severely affected, particularly in central and low lying areas. The KR Circle underpass was completely submerged , forcing authorities to barricade the stretch. Commuters were stranded for hours as waterlogged roads, fallen trees, and stalled vehicles compounded the congestion during peak evening hours.
Officials noted that while emergency teams cleared many obstructions overnight, restoration work is still underway in several parts of the city. Temporary power disruptions were also reported in multiple localities due to damaged poles and wires.
The sudden nature of the storm caught many residents off guard, with buildings in several areas reporting partial damage. Authorities have since issued a rain alert for the next three days , urging residents to exercise caution.
The incident has once again raised concerns over Bengaluru’s urban resilience, particularly its drainage capacity and infrastructure preparedness for extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent.
